Cadmium accumulation in Medicago sativa seedlings

Growth parameters and Cd accumulation were investigated in alfalfa seedlings treated with 10 microM salicylic acid (SA) at the beginning of seed imbibition. Shoot and root growths were accelerated by SA treatment and suppressed by Cd both in presence and absence of SA. Cd accumulation was stimulated by SA and depended on the duration of the treatment. K, Mg, Ca and Fe contents in roots were decreased in the presence of Cd alone, whereas SA induced a decrease of Mg, Ca and Fe. Shoot K, Mg and Ca concentrations were increased by both Cd or SA when used alone in the absence of the other tested substance. High negative correlation between Cd conc. and K or Ca conc. in root showed a competition for the same carrier not regulated by SA. The influence of SA on positive correlations between Cd and Mg conc. and between Cd and Fe conc. in shoots indicated a possible mechanism of SA action through maintenance of ionic homeostasis.
