We compared the performance of ISA BROWN hybrid hens housed either in cage batteries (CB, n=36) or in a deep litter system (DL, n=36) and fed a compound feed containing a vegetable supplement Proenergol instead of meat and bone meal. The number of eggs laid, their weight and shell quality, as well as the clinical state and mortality of the hens were monitored daily during 9 months. In comparison with DL hens, the performance of CB hens was characterized by significantly lower mean egg weight, higher number of eggs per hen per day, higher egg mass weight per hen per day, higher proportion of cracked eggs, lower mortality, and non-significantly higher egg yield. As shown by our results, the deep litter system led to lower laying performance.
