The study was aimed at determining potential differences in seed quality of spring and winter barley in relation to varieties (4 winter and 2 spring barley varieties) and growing conditions (6 locations, 2 years). Three germination tests were performed on each seed sample as follows: 1) standard test; 2) low temperature and drought stress test and 3) test in a salt solution. The germination of winter varieties was influenced by provenance, both measures of vigour (2 and 3 tests) and year. Significant differences between varieties were found in all 3 traits. Spring varieties differed only in germination and vigour (3) in one of the 2 years studied when the influence of provenance prevailed. The different effects of variety and provenance on seed vigour shown by our results could be promising for the breeding of high vigour barley varieties. Some preliminary results were obtained by using controlled deterioration as a vigour testing method for barley. The suitable conditions seem to be 45 deg C and 24% moisture content for 24 hours.
