A field experiment was conducted in 1995 at Werer Research Center to estimate the extent of genetic variation in groundnut (Arachis hypogaea L.). Fourteen characters were considered. Analysis of variance indicated significant differences among the genotypes for all traits. There was adequate genetic variability, heritability in the broad sense and expected genetic advance for most of the traits, including pod, and kernel yields, indicating the possibility for improvement and effectiveness of selection. However, percentage mature pods, shelling percentage and oil and protein contents showed relatively lower genetic variation. It is advisable that future breeding program should exploit the wealth of genetic variability available in the population.
