One hundred twenty nine landrace populations of barley collected from 6 awrajas to Tigray and maintained at the Ethiopia Institute of Biodiversity Conservation and Research, were grown in the field at Mekelle Research Center (1970 m.a.s.l.) during the main cropping season of 1996. The materials were classified for six discrete characters (Stem pigmentation, Row type, Caryopsis type, Rachilla length, Awn pubescence and Lema colour). The diversity was estimated by using the Shannon-Weaver diversity index (H') for each of the characters to examine the overall genetic divergence between accessions on the basis of administrative boundaries (awrajas) within Tigray. Much of the variation in diversity is due to difference among characters and some differences were detected among awrajas of collection. Polymorphism was high for Rachilla hair type (H' = 0.84)and the highest variation was obtained from the Raya mountains (H' = 0.53). Mean diversity for Tigray was 0.45. The regional diversity estimate was below expectation probably due to the inclusion of characters known to be less varied in the country. The differences in diversity among different areas of the region suggest a differential consideration in selection of areas for insitu conservation.
