The article reports on the BAT reference document for sugar industry published in 2005. Connection between the BAT Reference Document and the IPPC (Integrated Pollution Prevention and Control) directive and the role of the BAT Document in granting permission for use of the environment are discussed. The interpretation of the Best Available Techniques in the Hungarian sugar industry are shown by examples based on the document.
