Genome structure of Bulgarian bread wheat cultivars as revealed by meiotic chromosome pairing and interchange analysis [Triticum aestivum L.]

Chromosome pairing and presence of chromosome translocations were studied at meiotic metaphase I in F1 hybrids of 26 Bulgarian bread wheat cultivars, 6 advanced breeding lines and 3 cultivars of different origin with the standard wheat cultivar Chinese Spring. The chromosomes involved in interchanges were identified by N banding. The number of unbound arms of B genome chromosomes was higher in comparison with A and D genome chromosomes. Chromosomes 4B, 1B and 7A had the relatively highest percentage of unbound arms, while chromosome 3B had the highest pairing frequency. The majority of Bulgarian wheat cultivars and lines (71.9%) differed from Chinese Spring by one to three different translocations. The wheat-rye translocation 1BL.1RS was identified in 25% of the studied cultivars. Translocations between chromosomes belonging to one and the same homologous group or genome, mostly groups 2 and 7 and B genome, were shown to dominate in the studied Bulgarian cultivars. The only translocation involving non-homologous chromosomes from different genomes was T5A.6B

[Sono stati studiati l´appaiamento e la presenza di traslocazioni cromosomiche alla metafase I della meiosi in ibridi F1 di 26 cultivar bulgare di frumento per panificazione, 6 linee in stato avanzato di miglioramento genetico e 3 cultivar di origine diversa con la varietà standard di frumento Chinese Spring. I cromosomi interessati da interscambi sono stati identificati mediante bandeggio N. Il numero di braccia non appaiate dei cromosomi del genoma B era più alto rispetto ai cromosomi dei genomi A e D. I cromosomi 4B, 1B e 7A presentavano la percentuale relativa più elevata di braccia non appaiate, mentre il cromosoma 3B aveva la più alta frequenza di appaiamento. La maggioranza (71,9%) delle cultivar e linee bulgare di frumento si differenziava da Chinese Spring per 1-3 traslocazioni diverse. La traslocazione frumento-segale 1BL.1RS è stata identificata nel 25% delle cultivar studiate. E´ stato dimostrato che nelle cultivar bulgare studiate dominavano le traslocazioni fra cromosomi appartenenti a uno e allo stesso gruppo omologo o genoma, soprattutto i gruppi 2 e 7 e il genoma B. L´unica traslocazione che interessava cromosomi non omologhi derivanti da genomi diversi era la T5A.6B.]
