Decreasing rate of water content, hardness, rate of dry matter and total amount of polyphenols of petiole in Japanese butterber cultivar 'Aichi Wase' native stocks

In order to use as breeding material for butterbur with long shelf life, 'Aichi Wase' native stocks were collected in Aichi Prefecture, and their characteristics such as decreasing rate of water content, hardness, rate of dry matter and total amount of polyphenols of petiole were examined comparing with the superior virus free stock. The results are as follows: l. On the decreasing rate of water content in petiole, 'Chita No. 1' was constantly lower than the virus free stock and the other native stocks at late raising culture and forcing culture. 2. Hardness of petiole of two native stocks were as same as the virus free stock, and the others were more fragile than the virus free stock. 3. Rates of dry matter of three stocks were as same as the virus free stock, and the others were lower than the virus free stock. 4. On total amount of polyphenols in petiole, one native stock was obviously higher than the virus free stock, and the others were lower than the virus free. From the above results, there was differentiation in characteristics of the decreasing of water content and the amount of polyphenol etc. among native stocks in Japanese butterbur cultivar 'Aichi wase', so it was expected that new butterbur with long shelf life could be obtained efficiently with using superior native stock as breeding material.
