Mortality tests on egg and larval stages of chestnut curculio, Curculio sikkimensis (HELLER) in chestnuts were conducted with three fumigants of phosphine, sulfuryl fluoride and methyl iodide. Mortality was 18.0% and 95.2%, respectively for phosphine fumigation at 1.5g/m(2) at 15 deg C for 24 hours and at 2.0g/m(2) at 25 deg C for 48 hours. Mortality of 96.2-99.4% was also obtained at 40g/m(2) for 24 hours at 25 deg C in the sulfuryl fluoride fumigation. Complete mortality was not obtained from phosphine and sulfuryl fluoride fumigation because of lower efficacy for egg stage of the pest The highest mortality was confirmed in methyl iodide fumigation and the LD50 and LD95 values were 15.0g/m(2) and 32.3g/m(2) for 2 hours at 15t . Complete mortality for eggs and immature larvae was attained at 50g/m(2) for 2 hours at 15 deg C, while mortality of 98.9-99.9% for mature larvae was obtained at 50-60g/m(2) for 2 hours at 15-25 deg C. Both larval stages of the chestnut fruit moth Cydia kurokoi and the yellow peach moth, Conogethes punctiferalis were also completely killed at 40g/m(2) of methyl iodide for 2 hours at 15 deg C.
