We found antibiotic activity against Legionella pneumophila from Igusa (Juncus effusus var. decipiens). The water extract or acetone extract of Igusa had potent antibacterial activity at an MIC of 20mg/ml. Antibiotic activity was stable up to 121 deg C with 100% activity (as compared with that at 25 deg C). Stable activity was seen in the pH range of 3.0-9.0 with more than 80% activity at pH 9.0 (as compared with that at pH6.0). The higher the Igusa content in the liquid medium was, the more the growth of Legionella pneumophila was inhibited. In cultures of 96 h at 37 deg C, Legionella pneumophila was not detected by the addition of 100mg/ml of Igusa. Viable cells at the concentration of 5 x 10(6) CFU/ml in 10mg/ml of Igusa with 0.2mg/l free chlorine became undetectable within 5 min.
