In this study, a comparison of the present river landscape along the upper reaches of the Tenryu River in Nagano Prefecture with old photographs was made. I explored the transformation of the landscape that occurred over the decades of rapid economic growth in Japan, which while being greatly appreciated by local people were a turning point in people's connection with the river. Using 243 old photographs as reference, new photographs were taken at the same positions and angles and survey analysis was performed on the transformation of the photographic subjects and sites, as well as on the path connecting these sites. I also explored differences in the residences of the people who provided the old photographs and how their relationships with the river and the local community influenced the transformation of the river landscape. The results clearly show that even for the same river, the general recollections of residents and river users differ according to the river's importance in their daily lives and modes of land utilization, such that varied techniques are necessary to stimulate those recollections.
