Socio-economic features of India have been regulated by the caste system. Some of these features rigidly remain, and some have shown different aspects recently. This study is based upon field research, and emphasises both the traditional and current contexts of the socio-economic system in relation to caste and reveals the background of the changes. Research results depict the fundamental hierarchical structure of landholding and occupation to be rigidly unchanged. However, the increasing population and the process of inheritance are decreasing the landholdings of the Brahmins. The Kshatriyas are focused on cultivation and farm economies owing to their adoption of new techniques of agriculture. Institutional support has raised the socio-economic status of lower classes such as the Sudra. Some of them have purchased land from the upper classes and others have started new businesses or become government officials. Farm work has been gradually mechanized, especially with the introduction of tractors; however, in addition to the purchasing capability of farmers, educational background is reflected in the performance of farming practice.
