The internal sexual organs of the male train millipede (Parafontaria laminata armigera VERHOEF) and the changes in the amount of germ cells. Tadashi Fujikawa and Toshio Yoshida (Faculty of Agriculture, Shinshu University, Minami-Minowa, Nagano 399-4511, Japan). We estimated the changes in the amount of germ cells in the internal sexual organs of the male train millipedes (Parafontaria laminata armigera VERHOEFF), based on the changes in microscopic scaled transection areas of duct deferens and testis. Specimens has been collected 5 times from 20th September 2001 to 20th July 2002 at Norikura highland in Nagano, Japan. These millipedes were embedded in paraffin and sectioned into 9 mum thickness for microscopic observation. The duct deferens of the train millipedes was a ladder type common for millipedes. The testis lined in pairs on both sides of the duct deferens in the 8th and the successive segments. Most of the germ cells in the testis were immature before hibernation (October 2001) but those in the testis and duct deferens after the hibernation were already mature. A maximum transection area of the testis was observed in October 2001, which continuously reduced until July 2002. In contrast, the transection area of duct deferens gradually increased until June 2002, and then decreased in July 2002. Therefore, it is suggested that germ cells in the male was reduced from June to July.
