The time course of C-reactive protein in a dog [Canis lupus familiaris] suffering acute pancreatitis

A female Shetland sheepdog was referred to us suffering from depression, anorexia and bloody diarrhea. A physical examination demonstrated abdominal pain. Hematological examination revealed an increase in WBC, and a serum chemistry analysis revealed an increment in serum alkaline phosphatase, amylase and lipase. Serum CRP levels markedly increased at 51 mg/dl. The dog was therefore diagnosed as suffering from acute pancreatitis. For primary care, NPO (nothing by mouth) was conducted for three days, and antibiotic and gabexate mesilate were administrated intravenously. On the second day, the WBC and serum lipase increased, but serum CRP levels decreased compared with the first day. After 12 days, the dog was discharged from the veterinary hospital with vitality and appetite restored. In the current case, the measurement of serum CRP levels was effective in evaluating the condition of acute pancreatitis. Moreover, serial serum CRP measurements were effective in predicting the efficacy of treatment.
