Volunteer work on the apiculture extension in La Union, the Philippines
2006
Kawado, M.
As one of Japan Overseas Cooperation Volunteers, I did beekeeping extension activities with Don Mariano Marcos States University and La Union Beekeepers association Inc (LUBAI) in northern Luzon, the Philippines from 2003 to 2005. With no facilities for sterilization of beekeeping equipments, bee diseases like American Foul Brood can rage in the area, in addition to Varroa mites. I tried to solve these problems with LUBAI. Production of high quality queen was another focus with LUBAI. Every colony was replaced with a new queen. We also did breeding of better queen strain. As a result, total honey production of 2004 went over one ton, the highest record for LUBAI. To sell this large stock, new efforts were made on sales promotion, like observation hive, enlightening leaflets with attractive photos, and tasting of different tastes of honey. Maximum attention was paid on hygiene for bottling and packaging of the product. Then our honey got good demand from Japanese and Korean people staying in the Philippines.
