Improving grain yield and quality of japonica rice continues to be a major breeding objective in Korea. In this study we evaluated genetic divergence among four japonica rice cultivars and assessed the relationship between genetic distance and hybrid performance in all possible non-reciprocal crosses among them. The six F₁ hybrids along with the four parents were evaluated for fourteen panicle-related traits including primary rachis branches per panicle, grains per panicle, panicle number and grain yield in a replicated field trial.
