The International Crop Information System (ICIS) is a database system that provides integrated management of global information on crop improvement and management both for individual crops and for farming systems. Through the years, ICIS has been used by the International Rice Research Institute, other agricultural research partners, and some private seed companies to store their crop genealogy, characterization and evaluation data. The increasing number of users has lead to new ideas and suggestions to improve ICIS. These have lead to the birth of new application modules in the system. The ICIS Inventory Management System (IMS) is a module designed to manage inventory information for any entities, including genetic resources and breeders' seed stock. The IMS tracks individual entities, where they are stored, what quantities are in storage and what quantities are available for use. Core parts of ICIS are being ported to the Java platform for various reasons, including increasing platform portability, and database options. Accessibility is being improved by adding programming language-agrnostics Web Services technology and by adding a Web-based front-end. The Java environment will improve scalability and allow ICIS to integrate other excellent open source software used in bioinformatics and the life sciences. ICIS is identified as the technology to be used by the new International Rice Genetic Resources Information System to increase interoperability with other genebanks across partner institutions and to better facilitate the Genebank staff in performing their daily activities. ICIS tools and applications are used to execute the following operations: 1) Seed acquisition and passport registration, 2) Seed evaluation and characterization, 3) Seed inventory and management, and 4) Seed distribution.
