Terminal report on potential of Acacia pods as feeds for goats
1997
Barcelo, P.M.
A study was conducted to determine the performance of goats fed with Samanaea saman in combination with Pennisetum purpureum. Specifically, it aimed to determine the gain weight, feed consumption, feed conversion efficiency and profit above feed and stock cost. The gain in weight of goats fed with 0% to 25% levels acacia pods in combination with P. purpureum was significantly better than goats fed with 50% to 100% levels acacia pods in combination to P. Purpureum. Goats fed with 0% to 50% acacia pods in combination to P. purpureum had significantly higher feed consumption than goats fed with 100% acacia pods. The goats fed with 100% acacia pods had the lowest profit above feed stock cost which was significantly different to the goats fed with 0% to 50% levels of acacia pods in combination with P. purpureum. Acacia pods was supplemented to grazing goats to determine the gain in weight and the mean pod consumption/ The grazing goats with acacia pod supplement had comparable gain in weight to goats without acacia pod supplement. The mean pod consumtion for goat was 1.58 kg/day.
