Population density and nitrogen fertilization of young cob corn intercropped with pole sitao
2003
Mangaser, V.T.
This study was conducted to determine the most appropriate population density (15, 20, 25 seeds/linear meter), best level of N fertilization (90, 120, and 150 kg N/ha) and interaction effects of young cob corn interplanted to pole sitao employing the RCBD factorial design with 3 blocks. This was conducted at the Vegetable Production Farm of the Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University, Bacnotan, La Union from September 2, 2002 to November 5, 2002. Based on the finding of the study, baby corn planted at 25 seeds per linear meter intercropped with pole sitao significantly registered the heaviest young cob corn (3295.00 g/plot or 228.19 kg/ha). Application of N fertilizer at the rate of 90 kg N/ha was the optimum economic rate for optimum yield of baby corn intercropped with pole sitao. A substantial combined return on total expenses (106.40%, net return Php 55,857.25) and cost benefit ratio (2.06%) was realized in baby corn intercropping scheme with an LER of 1.15 indicating an economic viability and environmental soundness of growing corn with pole sitao.
