Research study was conducted at Kafur Dheri Unit, Peshawar to findthe perception of farmer about waterlogging, salinity, irrigation facility, tubewell performance, and management transfer of irrigation and drainagesystem, from June to October 2001. To assess these parameters astructured proforma was prepared and a total of 56 farmers wereinterviewed both from waterlogged and non-waterlogged areas of KafurDheri Unit Peshawar. In waterlogged areas mostly watertable was veryshallow (0.41m) and caused a severe problem for crops, however, watertablewas deep (2 m) where natural drains were passing nearby or wheretubewells were working properly for a long time. Some farmers (29%) haveconstructed small field drains whereas most of the main drains were siltedup. Farmers have no Water Users Association (WUA) or FarmerOrganizations (FOs) to resolve their problems. Majority of the farmers arenot in a position to bear the operation and maintenance cost of thetubewells, hence, they requested for a relief package in case tubewells arehanded over to them. Major crops of the area were maize, wheat, sugarcaneand fodder but in waterlogged areas rice and sugarcane were the majorcrops. It is concluded from the study that waterlogging is the majorproblem of the area and it increases day-by-day due to non collaborationof farmers on maintenance of the drains, which causes reduction in cropyield, hence, rehabilitation of existing drainage system is necessary.
