Sensitivity of 34 industrial strains of lactic acid bacteria of genera Streptococcus, Lactococcus, Leuconostoc and Lactobacillus as well as 18 commercial dairy starter cultures to vancomycin in concentrations from 5 to 1000 mcg/ml of medium was investigated. It has been stated that bacteria of genera Lactococcus, Streptococcus and homofermentative Lactobacillus exhibited low tolerance of vancomycin. On the other hand, high tolerance of vancomycin was observed for strains of genera Leuconostoc and heterofermentative Lactobacillus. Among the examined strains, Lb. rhamnosus was the only one with differentiated strain tolerance of vancomycin. The obtained results confirmed suitability of vancomycin for selective enumeration of Leuconostoc bacteria in commercial dairy starter cultures except that containing homofermentative rods of genus Lactobacillus
