This paper presents the influence of the lessivage process on water retention capability in different genetic horizons of Luvisols developed from loess like deposits at the marginal zone of the Carpathian Foothills. It was found that in the investigated Luvisols the majority of retained water is "the available water", which is retained mainly in surface horizons of these soils: humus and eluvial horizons. It was also determined that the compacted illuvial Bt horizon, formed as a result of a lessivage process, is characterized by a lower content of macropores and restricts rainfall water infiltration downwards soil profile
