The analysis involved 4801 udder milk samples from 10 private cowsheds in the Lublin region in 1999-01. It was stated that the number of somatic cells decreased significantly together with the growth of the herd size, the use of special milking equipment and better zoohygienic conditions. SCC was significantly higher in subsequent lactations (378 680 000 in the first lactation and 705 770 000 in the fourth). A significant growth in the number of somatic cells was noted with the course of lactations and it was not affected by genotype. The number was significantly higher in summer (543 010 000) than in spring (375 800 000) and winter (42 1050 000). Also, milk from the grazing time had a significantly lower SCC (417 190 000) compared with the winter-feeding system (507 170 000). These relations were accompanied by the changes in fat and protein content
