Author of this paper focuses on the multidimensional aspects of growth and sustainable development on the rural areas. Multifunctional development is a measure of achieving sustainability in the rural areas. The idea covers an effective use of all assets present in these areas resulting in a production of non-agriculture outputs. Capitals portfolio is a good representative of multifunctional development in the rural areas. Sustainable livelihoods approach on the fundaments of analysis of the five capitals: natural, social, human, physical and financial on the ground of environment-economysociety system is proposed. Augmenting the number of dimensions causes enhanced complexity of mathematical models. However this approach allows for more effective management on the rural areas, poverty limiting showed by increase of individual income, decrease of unemployment, economical growth in the units of GNP per capita
