Effect of Sinorhizobium inoculation and chicken manure on nodulation and forage yield of alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) under irrigation in a Semi-arid environment

WRAPPot and field experiments were carned out to study the effect of Sinorhizobium meliloti strain ENRRI Al2 and chicken manure (0, 2,4,6, 8 and 10 ton/ha) oil alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) cultivar "Hegazi". In the pot experiment, Sinorhizobium inoculation and levels of chicken manure significantly (P ~ 0.05) increased plant height, shoot fresh and dry weight, root fresh and dry weight and number of nodules and their dry weight. In the field experiment, both Sinorhizobium and chicken manure significantly (P ~ 0.05) increased plant density, forage fresh yield and protein content, and significantly decreased crude fibre percent. Forage fresh yield and chicken manure level we re highly correlated (r 0.99) and they best fit in a polynomial model, for all cuts. The results indicated the importance of Sinorhizobium inoculation as a promising biofertilizer for alfalfa in situations of low nitrogen content, especially when supplemented with a suitable dose of chicken manure
