Ascend 50 SC: A new insecticide for rice

Numerous bioefficacy studies of Ascend 50 SC (fipronil 50 gai/l) to control various pests in pre-germinated direct seeded rice were conducted since 1992, the results were that at the rate of 0.8-1.6 g ai/rai. Ascend provided good control on thrips, Stenchaetothrips biformis (Bagnall) comparable to standard carbaryl 17.0 g ai/rai, excellent rice leaffolder, Cnaphalocrocis medinalis (Guenee) control was also succeeded at the rate of 1.0-4.0 g ai/rai superior to standard cypermethrin+BPMC 41 percent EC at 82.0 g ai/rai, at higher rate 4.0-8.0 g ai/rai. Ascend gave good control on Stemborer, Scirpophaga incertulas (Walker) comparable to monocrotophos 60 WSC at 72.0 g ai/rai, finally for brown planthopper, Nilaparvata lugens (Stal). Ascend provided successful control at the rate of 4.0-16.0 g ai/rai both laboratory and field test superior to compared products. All rates tested of Ascend did not affect on spiders population in treated plots.
