Mean values of thermal diffusivity were calculated for basic soils in Bulgaria for the layer 0.02-0.20 m using soil temperature measurements at 17 stations of the National hydrometeorological network of NIMH – BAS. Mechanical composition and main physical properties (volume water content, bulk density and air filled pores) of soil samples, taken at the grassed grounds of meteorological stations from the layer 0.05-0.10 m near to the soil thermometers, were determined in laboratories of Poushkarov Institute of Soil Science. Relationships between bulk density as well as volume water content, and il content and clay content of soils were obtained – the corresponding coefficients of determination are about and more than 0.80. The influence of mechanical composition and physical properties of soils on thermal diffusivity was investigated. Irrespectively of using indirect method for calculating of thermal diffusivity, the obtained relationships for t en of the stations have high coefficients of determination. These preliminary results show the necessity of continuing and extending of investigations.
