Forecast of the release date of trichogramma (Trichogramma brassicae) in the biological control of the European corn borer (Ostrinia nubilalis) | Prevision des lachers de trichogrammes dans la lutte biologique contre la pyrale du mais
2006

The European corn borer is in Switzerland the most important pest of maize. It is currently controlled by mass releases of trichogramma, an egg-parasitoid. The effectiveness of the control depends on the good timing of the first release which should occur at the beginning of oviposition. The date of the release should be fixed approximately two weeks before the beginning of egg laying. This forecast is based on observations of the progress of pupation in infested maize stalks collected during the previous autumn. The 5% of pupation occurs on average at 190 degree-days (threshold 10 °C) and the oviposition begins approximately 170 degree-days later, which means about three weeks in June. This method is reliable and easy to implement.
