An evaluation was made of the behavior of 31 commercial and pre-commercial varieties of beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) towards the 'common bacterial blight' caused by Xanthomonas campestris pv. phaseoli under field conditions in a naturally Infected area during the 1983-1984 and 1984-1985 compaigns, and in laboratory by means of artificial inoculation. To evaluate the rate of affectation of the plants a five grades scale of values was used, and another on with six grades to determine the behavior of the varieties according to the Infection rate reached. It could be shown that all the studied varieties were more or less susceptible to the pathogene and that the pods were less affected than the leaves. Under artificial infection in laboratory all cultivars showed high rates of infection. The Cuban varieties had generally a reaction to the pathogene similar to that of the introduced ones and even better in some cases. It is recommended to Increase the selection work in order to obtain national varieties resistant to this disease.
