The use of sexual pheromone in the control of Zeuzera pyrina L. (Lepidoptera: Cossidae) in walnut orchard | Utilización de feromona sexual para el control de Zeuzera pyrina L. (Lepidoptera: Cossidae) en nogal

El lepidóptero Zeuzera pyrina (L.) es una especie xilófaga que en estado de larva ataca a brotes y ramas de numerosas especies frutales y forestales, pudiendo llegar a causar la muerte de árboles jóvenes o debilitamiento y pérdida de ramas en árboles de mayor edad. Las aplicaciones insecticidas son poco eficaces debido al hábito endófito de las larvas y al amplio periodo de oviposición. En este trabajo se estudian las posibilidades de uso de la feromona sexual de la especie para el control de sus poblaciones en nogales de dos localidades del Sur de Portugal (Ferreira de Alentejo y Beja), en donde se ensayaron respectivamente las técnicas de trampeo masivo y de confusión sexual durante los años 2002 y 2003. El método del trampeo masivo, con el uso de dispensadores de feromonas en trampas Mastrap (Isagro), resultó efectivo a densidades de 8 y 5 trampas/ha. También dio resultados aceptables el método de confusión sexual mediante dispensadores Izonet Z que contienen 70 mg de (E,Z)-2, 13-octodecadienil acetato y (E,Z)-3, 13-octodecadienil acetato, a las densidades de 400 dispensadores en el 2002 y 300 dispensadores en el 2003.

Zeuzera pyrina L. is a species that attacks, in larval stage, the buds and branches of numerous fruit and forest trees species, being able to end up causing the death of young trees or weakening and loss of branches in trees of more age. The insecticide applications are not very effective due to the endophytic habit of the larvae and to the wide of oviposition period. In this work it is studied the possibilities of use of the sexual pheromone of the species for the control of their populations in walnuts of two towns of the South of Portugal (Ferreira of Alentejo and Beja) where we experiments the techniques of mass trapping and mating disruption during the years 2002 and 2003. The method of mass trapping with the use of pheromone dispensers in traps Mastrap (Isagro) was effective to densities of 8 and 5 traps/ha. Also gave acceptable results the method of mating disruption by means of dispensers Izonet Z that contain 70 mg of (E,Z)- 2, 13-octodecadienil acetate and (E,Z)-3, 13-octodecadienil acetate, to the density of 400 dispensers in the 2002 and 300 dispensers in the 2003.
