Effect of seed rate and weed control on agronomic performance of faba bean (Vicia faba L.)

Faba bean is among the major highland grain food legumes contributing an enormous amount of protein to the human diet in Ethiopia. An experiment was conducted on farmers' fields around Shambu during the 1997 and 1998 cropping seasons to study the influence of seed rate and weeding frequency on the agronomic performance of faba bean. The treatments comprised factorial combinations of three seed rates (150, 200, 250 kg ha sup(-1) and three weeding frequencies (no weeding, hand weeding once during 25-30 days after crop emergence [DACE]; and two times hand weeding [25-30 and 45 DACE]) arranged in randomized complete block design in three replications. The results showed that seed rate, weeding frequency and the interaction of seed rate and weeding frequency had no significant effects on plant height, number of pods per plant and number of seeds per pod during the 1997 and 1998 cropping seasons. However, the combined analysis over years showed a significant effect (P0.05) on the number of seeds per pod. In 1997, seed rate had a significant effect (P0.05) on grain yield, but not during the 1998 cropping season. Weeding frequency and its interaction with seed rate showed no significant effect on grain yield in either cropping season. It is, therefore, possible to conclude that proper seed rate with optimum hand weeding can maximize the yield of faba bean.
