Farmers grow linseed (Linum usitatissimum L.) using high seed rate without weeding to suppress weed density. Linseed is a poor competitor to weed as compared to other oil seed crops. An experiment was executed during the main rainy season season of 1997 and 1998, at Sinana (on-station), Dinsho, Agarfa, and Gasera Districts, to assess flexible and possible combination effects of weeding frequencies and seeding rates on seed yield and yield components of the linseed improved variety, CI-1525. Differences were observed in growth, distribution and infestation of weed flora between experimental fields under on station and on-farm conditions. Under both between experimental fields under on station and on-farm conditions. Under high weed infestation harvest index, seeds boll sup(-1), and number of seeds plant sup(-1). Under high weed infestation early hand weeding enabled the variety to produce more productive tillers by avoiding competition from weeds. This increased photosynthetic potential of the plant. Second hand weeding favoured more of harvest index, bolls and seeds plant sup(-1). The mobilization of more photosynthetic products to the bolls during boll setting might increase seed yields per unit area sup(-1) through increasing number of seeds, seed yields and bolls plant sup(-1). Harvest index contributed about 51.9% and 48.7% to the variation of seed yield in on-station and on-farm, respectively, indicating high movement of photosynthetic product into the seed. Generally, the highest seed yield obtained from proper weeding could be from the cumulative effects of harvest index and seeds plant sup(-1). The most economical treatment combination was 40 kg ha sup(-1) seed rate with one and two hand weeding under on-farm and on-station conditions, respectively. Seeding rates of 25-30 kg ha sup(-1) combined with two hand weeding could give optimum seed yield depending on the weed infestation level, the existing weather situation and seedbed preparation, under the present condition.
