Study of different weed control methods effects on the yield of safflower in dryland condition

order to determine the best weed control method in dry – farming of safflower and reach to optimal yield and also the best use of soil – water sources in drylands, this experiment was conducted in two years(2001-2002) as RCBD design in 3 replications at Maragheh, dry land agriculture research stations. The factors of trial were: A1= No weed control(check) A2= Complete hand weeding A3= Mechanical with sweep before stem elongation A4= Chemical control with treflan by 1.5 Lit/ha as before planting A5= Chemical control with treflan by 2.5 Lit/ha as before planting Combined analysis results showed that year effect was significant in 5% probability level on height of primary secondary branch and pods/plant. Control methods effect was significant in 1% probability level on weeds per unit area, plant height and grain yield. Only grain yield was affected by year × control methods interaction. Complete hand weeding with 1251 kg/ha grain yield arranged in class A and chemical control by 2.5 Lit/ha treflan with 1002 kg/ha grain yield arranged in second rank (class AB). Chemical control 2.5Lit/ha treflan with 291kg/ha oil yield, arranged after complete hand weeding. Over-all chemical weed control treatment by 2.5 Lit/ha trflan as before planting recommended for Maragheh region and other regions with similar climatic conditions.
