Efficacy of Betanal Progress OF ( BPOF ) 27.4% EC ( phenmedipham 9.1%+ desmedipham 7.1%+ etofumisate 11.2% )as compared to Betanal Progress AM ( BPAM ) 18% EC ( phenmedipham 6%+ desmedipham 6%+ etofumisate 6% ) , and metamitron ( Goltix 70% SC ) – GSC- as compared to Goltix 70% WP( GWP ) was investigated in a Randomized Complete Block Design trial in Tehran, Khorasan and Fars Provinces. The experiment included 4 replications and the following 13 treatments : BPAM at 4 l/ ha at 2- 4 leaf stage of sugar beet (sb), BPAM 2 l/ ha at cotyledon stage of sb + 2 l/ ha one week laterBPOF at 2,3, and 4 l/ ha at 2- 4 leaf stage of sb, 1.5 and 2 l/ ha at cotyledon stsge of sb and repeated one week later, 4.5kg/ ha of GWP and 4.5 l/ ha of GSC alone or combined with Betanal AM ( desmedipham 15.7% EC ) at 2- 4 leaf stage of sb, weedless and weedy checks . Data collected from the trial included: weed count one month after herbicide spray ing , dry weight of weeds before harvest, and yield. Results showed that Betanal Progress OF did not show much advantage over its pre decessor Betanal progress AM. Both formulations of metamitron were the best treatments of this trial. Because SC formulation is more up- to- date and easier to use than WP formulation , it is recommended that Goltix SC be registered as a sugar beet herbicide in Iran.
