The necessity of evaluation and characterization of plant germplasms for providing primary genetically materials and use them in breeding programs, is one of the main aims of genebanks. For this aim 81 accession of safflower from foreign countries have been planted in field of National Plant Genebank of Iran, Karaj. During the phenological phases, morphological and physiological characters, flower, head, seed, and yield and yield components have been evaluated according to IPGRI descriptor. Statistical parameters such as average, standard deviation, and correlation coefficient between each pair of characters has been calculated. Shannon verity coefficient has been done too. For knowing relationships between characters as a whole, principal component factor analysis (PCA) and regression for yield (dependente variable) have been done. The most rates of Shannon verity coefficient belong to the number of leaf spines and after that belong to leaf shape and location of branches. In PCA, the first factor influenced more by leaf spines, number of bracket spines, and second factor influenced more by location of branches, length of branches. Results of regression showed that 62.2% and 33.6% of total variations of yield related consequently to number of heads per plant and weight of head seed. Also considering isolation, the seeds have been regenerated and conserved in genebank coldstorage. Key words: safflower, germplasm, evaluation, genebank, morphology, IPGRI.
