In order to investigate and to compare quantitative and qualitative yield of watermelon an experiment was carried out at Agricultural Research Station of Gonbad in 2000 for two years. The experiment was arranged in a Randomized Complete Block Design with four replications and it was carried out under rainfed (common cultivation method of the region) and irrigated conditions. Twelve watermelon varieties were as follow: Charlie, Crimson 20, Crimson 19, Crimson 21, Sugar Baby, Charleston Gray, E75103 F1, Mahboobi, RS 610632, WM 8007, NS1033 and NS210. FD-W202 and FD-W101 replaced crimson 21 and NS1033 in the second year of the experiment. Each plot consisted of four 10.5 meter-long rows, spaced 2.5 meters apart. Within row distance was 0.75 meter. Characters such as fruit count average fruit weight and fruit yield at first, second harvest and total ones were counted, weighed and determined. Sugar content was also measured but only in one replication. Analysis of variance was done each year and combined analysis of variance was performed in the second year. Combined analysis of first and second year under irrigated was performed using 10 similar varieties. The same procedure was applied for the rainfed condition. Based on the results, we might possibly recommend Charlie and Crimson 20 for irrigated and sugar Baby and Charlie for rainfed condition.
