Effects of seed rates on quantitative and qualititative traits of hull_les barley Lines

The usage of hulles barley as a poultary feed in their daily diet is a major research activity of national and international research centers around the world. The objective of this study was to determine the effects of seeding rates (400, 450 and 500 seed/m 2 ) on quantitative and qualtitative characteristics and yield components of six hulless, promissing new lines named EHBYT 81-1, 2, 5, 11 and line number 18. A strip plot experimental design in base of randomaized block was set up in three replications at karaj Seed and Plant Improvement Institute, during 2002- 2004. The main- plots were allocated to the new six barley lines and sub- plots were three levels of seeding rates mentioned above. Combined analysis of variance for grain yield and yield components showed, that diference due to grain yield was not significant (P0.05), however, analysis of variance for yield cmponent showed that differences due to number of fertile spikes/m 2 and 1000 kernel wight were significant (P0.05). Regarding to qualtitative characters, seeding rates did not have significant effect on protein and amilose content of kernels. Also, results showed that seed rate effect on agronomic characters measured in this study was not significant. Correlation studies among different agronomic characters showed that there were significant positive correlation among yield components, biomass, number of spikes/m 2 and 1000 kernel weight. The highest grain yield was obtained (6.914 t/ha) from EHBYT-M 81-11 a promissing new line with % 13.24 and %25.36 protein and amilose content, respectively. It is concluded that appliction of 400 seeds/m 2 is a suitable seeding rate for obtaining high grain yield of hulles barley.
