The effects of the winter irrigation on the fruit setting of olive trees in Iran, the Roudbar region in the north of the country, following the two arid years: 1997-1998, and the eventual reduction of moisture content of the soil in the primary stages of flowering, (winter days), and also the increase in the percentage of shot berries as compared with the preceding years were the main aim sought by the team of researchers in the project. For the purpose at the arboretum in “Roudbar Olive Research Station “, thirty olive trees of zard variety were chosen for the study and Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD), having five treatments and four replications scheme, was devised on a time schedule. Every unit under the test comprised of two trees, (one fully fruit-bearing and the other less fruitful ), as well as one guard tree that separated each unit from the others and as to an irrigation timetable of the winter days (on the 8th and 22nd days of the months) 500 liters of water was supplied to each square meter of the shady canopy of soil. Later, the team took counts of the number of both the flowering grown on branches, (totally four on every tree and extending in four main directions), the number of inflorescence and percentage of fruit setting in order to assess the consequences of the project implementation. As to the results of the study, there were a significant difference in the percentage of fruit set,( in the level 1% ) between the plants so treated and he control plants in the station. Thus, the winter irrigation was found to be most effective in the fruit set when carried out during the Januaryand also the lowest level in fruit set was related to those plants deprived of irrigation, i.e.,( the untreated control group).
