Evaluation and determination of the best early planting dates of summer maize in northern part of Khuzestan under furrow and sprinkler irrigation(center pivot) systems

The experiment conducted in 1998 and 1999 at Safiabad agricultural research center in Dezfulin order to evaluate the effects of furrow and sprinkler irrigation systems on yield and other characteristics of two corn hybrids. Experimental design was a randomaized complete block with split plot arrangement of the treatments in four replications and at two locations. Each field (location) was irrigated by furrow or sprinkler irrigation system. Planting dates were determined four, Jun. 10th and 25th, July 10th and 25th and two hybrids KSC 704 and KSC 604 as sub plot. Results of the experiment indicated that the amount of water used in furrow irrigation system approximately was two times more than the amount of water used under sprinkler irrigation system, 14000-16000 m3 of water in furrow and 6500-7500 m3 of water in sprinkler system were used. The effect of irrigation systems and corn hybrids and their interaction was not significant on pests population but in late planting dates pests population was decreased in both of the irrigation systems. Because of high temperature and low humidity, fertilization was pour in the first, second and third planting dates and only the fourth planting date had an acceptable yield in furrow irrigation system, which was higher than sprinkler system. The results indicated that, due to the high temperature and high level of evaporation in the region, center pivot irrigation system can not irrigate corn field efficiently. Although,center pivot irrigation system can decrease the air temperature between 8-12 0C in the corn field but this decreasing in air temperature was temporary and unuseful for the corn plant. So using center pivot irrigation system for early planting dates of corn is not recommendable and the best planting date for corn is July, 16 to 25 in north of Khuzestan province.
