Shell-closing strength of pearl oyster, Pincata fucata martensii and its relationship to mortality and various parts weight of oyster

The purpose of this study is to develop a strain of pearl oysters with a high survival rate through breeding. Using a newly developed device, we evaluated shell-closing strength as a possible selection indicator. The results of the test showed that (1) oysters with higher shell-closing strengths had lower mortality; (2) oysters with extremely weak shell-closing strengths had a low filtering ability; and (3) the shell-closing strength reflected the muscular weight of the oyster and glycogen content in adductor muscle. These results suggested that the shell-closing strength might be a useful indicator in a breeding program focused on mortality due to malnutrition.
