The present study was conducted to evaluate the effect of feeding Artemia nauplli with different lipid compositions on the survival, growth, pigmentation and starvation resistance of brown sole larvae, Pleuronectes herzensteini. The Artemia was experimentally enriched using commercial preparations of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and/or eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA). Feeding with DHA-enriched Artemia improved both starvation resistance and normal pigmentation significantly when compared to Artemia enriched with EPA only. Compared to feeding with non-enriched Artemia, larval survival with DHA-enriched Artemia was significantly higher. A correlation was obtained between the percentage of normally pigmented or pseudoalbinic fish and the DHA/EPA ratio on 41-day post hatching fish. The results suggest that introducing dietary DHA during the larval feeding period improved survival, normal pigmentation and starvation resistance in brown sole.
