The effects of flooding period in latter growth stage to cadmium uptake by lowland rice [Oryza sativa] and soil physical property in harvest time

This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of flooding period in latter growth stage to cadmium (Cd) uptake by lowland rice (Oryza sativa L. cv. Koshihikari) and soil physical property in harvest time. The topsoil of experimental field in Jinzu River basin was slightly polluted with Cd and coarse textured. When flooding period was shortened from 40 days around heading to 20 days after heading, Cd content in brown rice was raised to two times content (0.1mgkgsup(1)). And when flooding period was extended to 47 days, Cd content in brown rice was not changed. Concerning soil physical property in harvest time, with shortening of flooding period to 20 days water content was decreased and dry bulk density was increased. And hardness of the surface in topsoil was increased, so traffic ability of harvester was improved. But in case flooding treatment continued 40 days, in coarse textured soil was well drained it was considered that there was not much impediment to traffic ability of harvester. The growth and yield of lowland rice were approximately equal between each experimental plots concerning flooding period in latter growth stage. In conclusion, it was adequate in coarse textured soil that flooding period in latter growth stage was set to 40 days from the point of view to decrease Cd content in brown rice as low as reasonably achievable.
