In Lithuania lawn grass breeding was initiated in 1982. At the beginning of this work grass seed samples were obtained from the collections of the All-Union Institute of Crop Production. Upon restoration of Lithuania's independence, the links with this institution were practically discontinued. As a result, it was necessary to start collection, investigation and storage of the genetic resources that had formed under Lithuanian conditions. Until now selection of local ecotypes has been considered as one of the most relevant methods in lawn grass breeding (Skirde, 1967; Kop'yus, 1977; Budin, 1979; Laptev, 1983; Wadington et al., 1992; Pronczuk, Zurek, 1994; Bonos, Mirphy, 1999). During the period 1994-2005 there were arranged 20 expeditions, during which 634 accessions of wild forms of grasses suitable for lawns were collected. Ecotypes were collected from natural and old swards. Part of ecotypes was exposed to continuous trampling (wear) and grew in the soils differing in texture, moisture regime and surface relief. For a long time wild populations of perennial grasses growing in Lithuania were believed to be unvaried and of little value from the breeding point of view (Lemeziene, Kanapeckas, 2000). The present work was focused on the search of initial breeding material for lawn grass breeding.
