Investigation, breeding and prospects for miliary crops in Lithuania | Izuchienie prosovidnykh kul'tur v Litve

Collections of miliary crops were investigated with breaks at the Dotnuva Breeding station, later at the Institute of Agriculture. The most abundant collections were investigated in 1980-1990 in close cooperation with the former All Union Plant Production Institute (VIR). Small seed samples were obtained from there and short reports were submitted them. In 1998 investigation of earlier selected prospective accessions of miliary crops were resumed. In this paper we present the findings of some millet genera investigation. The selected proso and chimiza varieties and populations differed in origin, height, shape of panicles and colour, length of vegetative growth season, and naturally, in seed yield, chemical composition, seed size and colour. The seed yield of different varieties and accessions of miliary crops fluctuated from 1.5 to 3.0 t/ha. When grown just after clover of the first year of use without any fertilization and pesticides. Results show that early-ripening chumizas and proso millet could be successfully grown for seed under Lithuanian and neighbouring countries agro-climatic conditions in ecological and conventional farms. Cultivation and management peculiarities of miliary plants for food and forage production need further and more comprehensive investigation.
