Latvian furniture: to be or not to be?
2007
Avots, M.
Furniture manufacturing is developing in Latvia, and there are lots of experts who feel that the future of the sector is brilliant. The added value of output is on the rise, new market niches are being conquered, and domestic demand is on the rise. The Latvian Forest Industry Federation predicts that over the next five years, the value of Latvian-made furniture will double to 190 million Lats, thus becoming the most important aspect of forest products. Furniture markets, for their part, say that there will be developed if enough timber is made available. At the end of January 2007, unfavourable weather conditions had caused greater problems in this regard than had ever been experienced before. New solutions are needed, and sceptical Latvian furniture makers are wondering whether the resource issue will be a life of death situation for them.
