Studies on protozoan infections in Estonia have been carried out since 1950-ies, but very little published data have reached the international science publicity due to the language barrier. The present literature review summarizes the Estonian research on parasitic protozoans published mainly in Estonian and Russian. Investigations cover: Eimeria (cattle, pigs, chicken and sheep), Isospora (pigs), Cryptosporidium (cattle), Toxoplasma (cats), Sarcocystis (cattle), and Babesia (cattle). Prevalence and treatment studies were the most common, but also development of vaccines and diagnostic methods was attempted. Studies include Plaan's discovery of Eimeria sporadica in chicken. The protozoan research of Estonia in still in its infancy, but has potential to guide development of animal farming to healthier animals and safer food products.
