[Yielding ability of wheat seeds in steppe zone]
2005
Babitsky, A. | Bredinsky, A.
A large body of research have demonstrated that agroecological conditions in which seeds are reproduced modificate in significant measure their genetically determined capacity for yield. A multitude of modifying factors is provided in the literature. In order to determine the factors which have decisive importance in the modification of the yielding ability in wheat seeds a long-term experiment was carried out in a semiarid steppe zone of the Odessa region. The modification of the yielding ability of the seeds was performed by their reproduction on maternal plants using 13 variants of fertilizer combinations and 3 variants of soil moisture regimes. The modified seeds were tested in the following year without fertilizer application and without watering. As the result of this experiment it was found that the higher yielding ability was obtained if maternal plants were grown under moisture 80% of total soil water capacity. Experimental evidence show that the modification of the yielding ability is a reproducible phenomenon which opens up new prospects for both resolution of the food problem and revealing the nature of crop productivity.
