Seasonal Profile of Rice Arthropods in San Luis, Aurora [Philippines]

Monitoring of arthropods was done to generate data on rice arthropod complex in the area. Results of analysis of rice arthropod composition under the different functional guilds showed that the sap feeders predominated at all the growth stages of rice plants across farmers' fields. The sap feeders were compared of green leafhopper. The green leafhopper had the highest population, white backed planthopper. Secure mole cricket damage was observed at early growth stages of rice plants in two farmer's fields while high population of grain feeders (rice bugs) was recorded during the ripening stage. The natural enemies monitored included web and non-web-forming spiders, wasps, lady beetle, ground beetle, mirid bag, field cricket, long-horned grasshopper (Conocephalus longipennis), damselfy, and dragonfly. Of the natural enemies, spiders were dominant in all the fields. In general, the population ratio between insect pests and natural enemies was in f avor of the latter. This indicates that the controlling effect of natural enemies was sufficient to keep insect pest population below damaging level.
