The efficacy of Trichoderma viride and Trichoderma sp. (T5-onion isolate) against soil-borne pathogens (Sclerotium cepivorum, Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cepae and Phomaterretris infecting onion cv. Rushmore) was determined in two field studies during the 2003 dry season, from Jan to Apr at the PhilRice Central Experiment Station and Bongabon, Nueva Ecija [Philippines]. Incidence of S. cepivorum and F. oxysporum f.sp. cepae was observed and recorded at 30 and 60 DAT. Higher incidence of both diseases were higher in plots inoculated with the organisms but no antagonists added into the soil. Incidence was generally lower when the antagonists, T. viride and T5 isolate, and fungicide (Maneb) were added to the soil inoculated with the pathogens. It was generally lower at 60 DAT than at 30 DAT except in the treatment with F. oxysporum f.sp. cepae and fungicide where incidence was similar at both plant ages. Trichoderma population in plots with the antagonists was slightly higher at 30 DAT than at 60 DAT.Yield was highest from the uninoculated plots but significantly differed only from those inoculated with organisms alone, S. cepivorum + the two antagonists, and pathogens with Maneb. The effects of both antagonists and the fungicide on the yield of onion were stronger on S. cepivorum than on F. oxysporum f.sp. cepae as shown by the higher yield obtained with the latter organism. The two antagonists reduced root infection caused by P. terrestris. But results showed that the fungicide used had higher reduction in root infection than the antagonists. T. viride population was higher at 60 DAT than at 30 DAT except with the treatment with T5 isolate alone. Disease severity did not vary much among the treatments with the pathogens and the antagonists as well as the fungicide. Yield however, did not differ much among the treatments.
