Utilization of dried ground full-fat coconut (Cocos nucifera Linn.) meat in diets of growing-finishing pigs (Sus scrofa Linn.)
2005
De Leon F. F. Jr
A series of studies were conducted to evaluate the potential use of dried full-fat cocnut meat (DFFCM) in diets of growing-finishing pigs. Study 1 was conducted to determine the keeping quality of mixed feeds with varying levels of DFFCM supplemented with antioxidant. Digestion trials were performed to determine the digestibility of different nutrients of diets with DFFCM in growing and finishing pigs, (Study 2). The performance of growing-finishing pigs fed diets with varying levels of DFFCM was evaluated. (Study 3). The proximate composition of DFFCM is 7.11% moisture, 2.22% ash, 6.92% crude protein, 58.27% ether extract, 8.92% crude fiber and 16.84% nitrogen-free extract, and contains gross energy of 7103 kcal/kg (air dry basis). There was no interaction effect between level of DFFCM and antioxidant (AO) on the temperature of mixed feeds up to 28 days storage except at day 14, with significantly lower temperature compared to other treatments, mixed feeds with 6% DFFCM stored for 28 days tended to increase moisture (M) and nitrogen-free extract (NFE) but addition of AO tended to decrease M, ash, crude protein (CP), and crude fiber (CF). At the end of storage period, the texture and color of mixed feeds an all treatments appeared to be powdery and light brown, respectively. Presence of weavils was initially observed and became numerous at day 21 up to the end of storage period. There was no significant difference among treatments on the apparent coefficient of digestibility (COD) on dry matter (DM), CF, EE, CF, and NFE in diets of growing and finishing pigs. Increasing level of DFFCM from 0 to 6% failed to significantly improve the total digestible nutrient (TDN) and digestible energy (DE) content of grower and finisher diets. However, average daily gain (ADG), average daily feed intake (ADFI), and feed conversion ration (FCR) of growing-finishing feeds were comparable for all treatments.
